A Democratic Veteran Ready for Change

Economic Mobility

To me economic mobility means a lot more than a good unemployment score. It’s not hard to imagine unemployment being low when many people need two or sometimes three jobs just to pay the bills. Gaston County can do better.

There was a time when we were not considered a bedroom community. People traveled here to find work and with a good plan it can happen again. It is time to invest in our future, that time is now!

School Safety

Providing school resource officers in every school is a good plan but it is not a solution. In addition to an increase in security we must do better in providing resources for mental health in our schools.

We already ask a great deal from our educators, providing a social worker/ school therapist for every school gives our students an opportunity to express their anxieties to an adult they know in that school every day and takes some of that pressure off our educators allowing them to spend more time educating.

Housing Opportunity

In my time with the Fair Housing Citizens Advisory Board I have learned a great deal about the issues we face as our community grows. Gaston County, with its proximity to Mecklenburg County, is expected to maintain rapid growth for the foreseeable future. As this happens it is imperative our leaders think about the needs of all our citizens as we zone out the county for that growth.

Fair housing is quickly becoming a national crisis and it is up to local leaders to be aware of this issue and to plan for it.

For years I looked on from the political sidelines and questioned what our leaders were doing. It’s pretty easy to do that isn’t it?

Over time it became clear to me that inaction of everyday citizens solves nothing and I was bringing very little to the table. Because of that thought I decided my inaction politically rendered my voice useless and if I was to ever help at all I would have no choice but to get involved.

My activism and my desire for change naturally led me to the Democratic Party and there I was welcomed with open arms. What I have learned since is that policy is complicated and we can’t all possibly agree all the time.

I have faith in the citizens of Gaston County, we are good people that truly want a better life for ourselves and our neighbors. This is a candidacy for you! It is a candidacy for the improvement of Gaston County.
